Anti-Oxidants For Your HealthOxygen is vital to all of our lives. We need a constant supply to help with burning of our body’s fuel, sugar. Let's look at how anti-oxidation may free you from the radical effects of injury and disease. Free radicals are chemicals that may occur naturally in our body with injury or inflammation. Free radicals are also inhaled in our air or when smoking cigarettes, eaten in our food and ingested through our drinks. Free radicals are unstably charged molecules that must and will combine with its opposite charge to become a stable molecule. That’s simple chemistry. Unfortunately, the free radical’s target is often an important enzyme or protein, which is damaged along with our cells and even our DNA. This may lead to muscle dysfunction, pain, arthritis, disease and possibly even cancer. It has been estimated that each puff of a cigarette may contain as many as 15 million free radicals, each of which can lead to cellular and DNA injury. Anti-oxidants can neutralize damaging free radicals. Supplements such as grape seed extract, French maritime pine bark and vitamin E are very effective anti-oxidants. Exercise and stretching may also help reduce the accumulation of free radicals in our bodies. Anti-oxidation may be a radically free way to live longer. |
