Fibromyalgia Information & Treatment:Fibromyalgia Is UnnervingFibromyalgia has being diagnosed much more commonly in the recent past due to increased knowledge and understanding by both physicians and people suffering chronic pain. Although I believe in the definite existence of the condition known as fibromyalgia, I do not like to term "fibromyalgia" as I feel it is too generic. Nevertheless, I will attempt to explain the origin of many fibromyalgic's pain. Research at the Lamb Pain Clinic indicates that deep spinal muscles (the multifidus and rotator brevis or longus) can become severely damaged and scarred with age and injury. The result is, ultimately, some form of nerve root and peripheral nerve compression or traction by muscles directly or indirectly. Nerve compression, also known as neuropathy, then causes various patterns of spinal pain, neurological disorders and referred pain. When there are many neuropathies or polyneuropathies, there will be many pains. When the polyneuropathies cause both upper body and lower body pain, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is likely. With fibromyalgia, there will be changes within the brain originating from neck and upper back polyneuropathies, which will contribute to fatigue, sleep disorder and "brain fog". Neck and spinal polyneuropathies will also contribute to headaches, jaw disorders, upper limb pain, lower limb pain, arthritis and chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations and bowel disorders. My concern with the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is that it is too easy to lump all these pain symptoms under the fibromyalgia umbrella. I believe it is more accurate to identify each individual neuropathy caused by each of these scarred muscles and identify the source of every complication such as headache, arm pain or fatigue. The results of breaking fibromyalgia up into its segments allows for a more effective treatment plan and one that is understood by the patient and treating practitioner. Fibromyalgia is also potentially preventable and reversible with a proper stretching program such as The Lamb Program™.
