Osteoarthritis & Compression Arthritis Pain & Treatment All adults, if they live long enough, will develop osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis. Many young adults will demonstrate signs of joint pain and stiffness in there twenties causing them to stop many of their beloved sports. I coined the term compression arthritis. Arthritis, by definition simply refers to a swollen, inflamed joint. The causes of which could be immune-related as in rheumatoid arthritis, infection-related as in septic arthritis or massive trauma as in traumatic arthritis. The most common form of arthritis, however, is osteoarthritis a.k.a. degenerative arthritis or wear and tear arthritis. Interestingly, new pain research seems to show that osteoarthritis is caused by mild, persistent joint compression that literally slowly crushes the joint. It is the muscles around the joint that do the crushing and it is often driven by abnormal nerve conduction from the spine and neck. As it appears to be caused by joint compression, I call osteoarthritis - compression arthritis. This is important because it reminds us of the cause. To treat any medical problem, it helps to understand the mechanisms involved. It is for this reason stretching can be very helpful for prevention and even reversal of compression-related arthritis.
