The Tenth Principle10. Dr. Lamb's Principle that "All Sensory Information is a Form of Pain" The last principle I want to give to you today is my principle that all we feel is really a form of pain information but just at different levels of intensity. What is the difference between a gentle scratch and a knife wound? What is the difference between a soft lovely light and a blinding bright light? What is the difference between a nice, relaxing ,quiet ,lovely song, and an exploding bomb? The primary difference in all these senses is intensity. If we take this idea to extremes, then we could say that extreme sensations create pain, or we could say pleasant sensations are really gentle pain. This can be important because it also helps to fill in the gaps with the other theories of constant total body pain, referred pain, early warning of pain, the flux theory and more. So I want you to remember that all sensation may be considered gentle or pleasant pain. Although, most patients do not really need to fully understand my pain concepts, I believe in offering the information as complete as I can. This helps with the anxiety that is related to pain. I have found that information gives a person power to help themselves. |
