The second principle2. Most of the muscle shortening will occur at rest such as sleep, sitting or standing. Although our daytime work is causing all kinds of muscle injuries, it is clear that most of the muscle shortening occurs at rest- while we sleep, sit and stand. This is why we wake up stiff in the morning or why our backs ache after prolonged sitting and standing. Our muscles are shortening when we stop moving. I call this static shortening or shortening when you stop moving and it is more prevalent as we age. People who sleep in one position or who have disrupted sleep or poor body position while sleeping, will be the worst to suffer. This is why our pains seem to always get worse in the night. Advanced sleep therapy will probably be very helpful in the future for chronic pain and arthritis. I want you to remember that our muscles shorten mostly at rest. |
