The Third Principle

3. Muscle shortening will accumulate over time eventually forming very firm scar tissue within the muscle.

Think about it! Muscles that remain persistently shortened for hours, weeks or even months will start to cause muscle cells to die. I describe it as a peppering of dead muscles cells within the muscle, much like we would apply garlic salt to a steak except that the garlic or dead cells would also penetrate deep into the steak. The dead cells would act as irritants and cause further muscle injury and shortening. So dead cells are very bad.

Interestingly, medicine has not yet created tests that will easily detect these small dead muscle scars, but they exist. They will not be seen on routine CAT (computer topography scan) scan, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or Ultrasound. These scars are detectable by using a new, high technology form of acupuncture known as intramuscular stimulation or IMS. I have created a new form of needling I have named Multi-Focal IMS. Some of the newer equipment such as surface EMG and a new soft-tissue MRI can demonstrate some of these changes. However, the future looks very enlightening

I want you to remember that these scars are present throughout your body’s muscles, but are most intense in the deep spinal muscles that are surrounding your vertebrae and disks. I refer to these small, important muscles as the "intrinsic spinal muscles" as they are intrinsic or interwoven within the spine.
