FIBROMYALGIA IS COMMON
Many of our readers have asked about the incidence of fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a very interesting pain condition because it represents, often,
the combination of pain problems for on together to form a big pain syndrome.
About half of the people who suffer from fibromyalgia probably acquired the
condition from a major accidents or injuries.
These accidents could include a car accident, a fall, but a sports injury,
repetitive work, and even childbirth. The other half of people who suffer
from fibromyalgia probably acquired from a combination of problems such as a
aging, accumulated minor trauma, hormone abnormalities such as thyroid disease,
chronic stress and anxiety, and even some medications such as cholesterol
medications.
Most of the text books reporting on fibromyalgia estimate the incidence to be
approximately 2% of the population. The criteria for diagnosing
fibromyalgia by the American College of Rheumatology is sometimes too rigid, and
does not detect early or mild cases of the condition.
In my experience, I feel that fibromyalgia syndrome has been under diagnosed in
the past, but I have noticed a significant increase in diagnosis over the past
two to four years. As a result of an aging population, a general increase
of repetitive work, and more public awareness, Fibromyalgia incidence is due to
increase.
My expectations are that 10% of adults will accommodate most or many of the
criteria for fibromyalgia. I also believe that public awareness about
myofascial pain, Fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injury and stretching will go
along the way to reducing this impending epidemic.
As always, keep long and strong.
