Fascinating Facts About Plantar FasciitisMany of our readers have expressed concern about their different foot pains. One of the most common foot pains described is a condition known as plantar fasciitis, or heel spurs. Foot pain is a common problem at any age but becomes very common over forty. Foot disorders, untreated, can go on to contribute to all kinds of problems such as arthritis and pain of the ankle, knee, hip, back, neck and even jaw pain. One of the most common foot problems that I see is plantar fasciitis. Classically, this condition is described as pain at the heel and in the tendon of the sole of the foot (plantar fascia). The condition can be associated with rheumatoid disease such as ankylosing spondylitis. Dr. Lamb feels that the condition is caused by a combination of factors. First, there is typically shortening of the muscles of the sole of the foot that attach the plantar fascia, that is the flexor digitorum brevis and the flexor accessorius muscles. This leads to a traction injury to the plantar fascia. This, in turn, leads to a traction injury to the bone of the heel leading to a bone spur. To complicate things, it appears that in many people, the muscles of the sole of the foot shorten causing this painful podiatry problem because of a nerve problem higher up in the spine. That is, in the area of L4 to S1 of the low back. It is for this reason that I treat P.F. with stretching not only of the foot but also of the low back. In this way I hope to improve possible undetected neuropathies of the low back, which may be contributing to the problem. The Lamb Program TM is a program of total body stretching that can be helpful for the prevention and reversal of many pain problems. Click Here Stretching Video For Plantar Fasciitis
