Preventing Injury Saves Lives and MoneyOn a personal level, my introduction into pain medicine was by accident, through my many accidents that caused me pain and disability. I have since fully recovered. Preventing my injuries however, would have been much simpler. So far, injury control has not had the high profile interest of the press or public. Diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease do require considerable attention but injury control should demand more attention than it has had thus far. In Canada, injuries are the leading cause of death for those under 44. Annually 13,000 Canadians are killed and nearly 250,000 are hospitalized, representing over two million hospital days. Cost estimates hover around 14.3 Billion dollars per year. Car and vehicular accidents are number one for death for those less than 38 years and injuries cause the loss of more productive healthy years of life than all other diseases combined. Injuries may be prevented or reduced by improved law enforcement and traffic safety, better automobile and product engineering, better pre-hospital and trauma care and training and, finally, in my area of research, aggressive and technical post-traumatic rehabilitation of the injured. Education and risk reduction are two of the most important aspects of injury prevention. "Don’t be stupid!" Finally, the word injury actually comes from the Latin word injuria, which means, "not right". Most injuries and accidents are preventable and ignoring this fact is clearly "not right." Injuries are also potentially preventable and reversible with a proper stretching program such as The Lamb ProgramTM. Watch for more on injuries on DrLamb.com.
