Stretching Reduces Injury & Improves Sports

I have been a proponent of stretching for almost ten years. I stretch myself,
and have created what I believe will be one of the most advanced stretching
systems to be made available. The first level, or level one, is presently
available with levels 2, 3 and 4 being made available over the course of the
next year.
However, stretching, at its most basic level, acts to restore reasonably normal
muscle length. When muscles shorten they cause compressed joints that ultimately
lead to poor joint dynamics causing abnormal tracking, joint crepitus, or
clicking, abnormal joint cartilage wear, pain, joint arthritis, and eventually
joint destruction.
Stretching increases the percentage of functional muscle, which is always less
then 100%, even in a well-stretched person. Therefore, more advanced stretching
techniques will obviously have an increased effect on athletic performance. I
have frequently said that an athlete is very much like an injured worker in that
they are striving to increase their percentage of functional muscle. It is for
this reason that many "therapies" for athletes are therapies for injured and
disabled individuals. Examples such as stretching, IMS, NSAIDS, creatine, sleep
performance enhancers (Tricyclic antidepressants) can be effective in chronic
pain, injury prevention and sports enhancement.
I am aware of some studies that did not demonstrate a reduction of injuries in
athletes who stretched versus those who did not stretch. My immediate response
is that obviously they stretched incorrectly.
Stretching techniques are very specific for:
* a particular goal
* an understood muscle group
* an appropriate amount of time
* the correct maneuver
* in conjunction with its appropriate intrinsic spinal muscle and nerve
Otherwise, the stretch may be inadequate.
This has been part of my focus of my research for the past eight years.
Be wary of medical studies that do not address the correct question and that
then draw sweeping conclusions.
