Why Do Women Suffer Fibromyalgia More than Men?Fibromyalgia is definitely more common in women than men. This is a fact. The reasons for this discrepancy are many. Some are because women are structurally more likely to suffer upper body neuropathy or nerve injury than a man due to decreased upper body muscle mass. Another reason is that women are usually more emotionally intuitive than men and are therefore more susceptible to intrinsic muscle tension of the neck and upper back. This will also lead to increased nerve root irritation and referred pain into the arms and legs. Yet another reason is that women regularly endure hormonal cycling and menopause which will also cause increased muscle shortening and spinal compression. The fact that women have breasts and men do not will contribute to an increase in upper back and neck injury and pain due to increased forward weight. It is also generally accepted that women perform more repetitive work at home and at the workplace, again contributing to increased arm, neck and back injury. Finally, the beauty of carrying a child in the womb for nine months will also contribute to neck, mid back and low back spinal compression. These are just some examples of why women are at much higher risk of recurring injury leading to many pain conditions such fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is also potentially preventable and reversible with a proper stretching program such as The Lamb Program™. Watch for more on Fibromyalgia and related conditions on DrLamb.com.
